Located in the heart of India, Kanha National Park is one of the tiger reserves and the largest national park of Madhya Pradesh state in India. One of India’s most spectacular and exciting National Parks, Kanha is home to the second largest population of tigers in India. In the 1930s, Kanha area was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar – the two valleys which form the two halves constituting the vast stretches of land. Kanha national park was created in 1955 and today is the core area of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, which came under Project Tiger in 1974. Together with a surrounding buffer zone and the neighbouring Phen Sanctuary, it forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve – making it the largest National Park in Central India. Today the park guards the wildlife it domiciles and follows measures with great care to maintain the overall protection of its flora, fauna and avifauna.

The tigers remain the most exciting draw of the place. Its contribution in saving many endangered wildlife species is perhaps one of the greatest achievements of this park. One of its first ambitious projects was to protect and preserve the local population of Barasingha (swamp deer). Hence, there are many species of grass recorded at Kanha some of which are important for the survival of Barasingha.

The Trip starts on Day 01 (Saturday) from Jabalpur and ends on day 06 (Thursday) at Jabalpur.

Special Guidelines to Book Game drives / Safaris

As per the latest guidelines issued by India wildlife authorities some changes have been made to book any game drive in the park. To reduce the pressure from the park, forest department have reduced the number of jeeps for these game drives, therefore, these drives needs to be booked & paid well in advance. These game drives once booked & paid are non refundable. In order to book these game drives names of all the clients are required along with their latest Passport details. No name change is permitted at later stage once its booked. The park official checks each client’s passport at the park gate while getting in for safari. If you apply for a new passport after booking your game drives, please carry your old passport as well.

Due to these changes in our booking system we strongly suggest you to book these Tiger trips at least 3 – 4 months in advance. We book tickets for all passengers as soon as permits become available, usually 3 months prior to the date of actual game drive.

Day 01: Arrival Jabalpur (by train or flight in the morning from Delhi / Mumbai) and transfer to Kanha NP

Arrive Jabalpur and drive by surface to Kanha National Park (3 – 4 hrs drive). Afternoon is free to have some time off as the next 3 days we will be busy doing 7 drives without any break. We stay in our lodge, situated in the Mocha village not very far from the park gate. In the late afternoon can go for nature walk around the lodge. ( Dinner)

Day 02: Kanha National Park (Morning & afternoon game drive)

We wake up early in the morning and set off for our first game drive by jeep and have another one later in the afternoon. We usually get 3 -4 hrs free time between these two drives to recover.

The park has a significant population of Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, the sloth bear, Barasingha and Indian wild dog. Herbivores include barasingha, barking deer, chousingha, sambar, gaur (Indian bison) and blue bull (nilgai). Feeding on these prey species are jackal, leopard, hyena, dhole (wild dog) and of course the tiger. After the jungle safari, we return to the hotel and have breakfast, served in the restaurant.  we drive back to the hotel after the evening safari and freshen up before we have the dinner. (B/fast & dinner)

Day 03: Kanha National Park (Morning & afternoon game drive)

We leave once again early in the morning from our lodge at around 5.45am, taking a picnic breakfast with us which we can eat at one of several designated stopping places in the park. Kanha is an Indian wildlife park of the imagination whose atmosphere and apparently endless landscape can rightly be described as Kipling home. Kanha Tiger Reserve abounds in meadows or medians which are basically open grasslands that have sprung up in fields of abandoned villages, evacuated to make way for the animals. Kanha meadow is one such example. (B/fast & dinner)

At some stage we can also visit the Kanha Museum, located inside the Reserve, which contains fascinating, well conceived exhibits relating to the entire ecosystem and its fauna and flora. In the afternoon we go for our sixth game drive into Kanha National Park. In the evening. (B/fast & dinner)
